A Full-Day Hike to Mount Nelse: Alpine Views, Good Company & Classic High Country Weather

Our over-40s hiking group set out from Falls Creek this morning for a full-day trek to Mount Nelse, one of the most rewarding viewpoints in Victoria’s High Country. The forecast promised cool conditions with patches of sunshine, and that’s exactly what we got—ideal weather for keeping a steady pace as we covered long kilometres across the Bogong High Plains.

We started from the Nordic Bowl trailhead, the air crisp and still carrying the bite of early alpine mornings. The first stretch followed the well-defined management tracks towards Heathy Spur before linking up with the Alpine Walking Track. As we moved higher, intermittent sunshine broke through the cloud cover, lighting up the plains in shifting silvers and greens. Snow gums twisted like sculptures around us, and the soft breeze carried that unmistakable alpine freshness that makes you breathe a little deeper.

Our group found a comfortable rhythm early on. Everyone appreciated the gentle undulating gradients that make this route accessible, even though the distance gives it a full-day feel. Along the way the landscape opened into wide, grassy plains dotted with summer wildflowers and framed by sweeping views stretching all the way to Mount Bogong on a clear break of sunshine.

Reaching Mount Nelse itself was the highlight. The last short ascent to the summit cairn brought us to a panoramic viewpoint that felt both exposed and exhilarating. Cool gusts swept across the ridge, but every so often the sun pushed through again, warming our backs as we took in the uninterrupted views of the surrounding ranges. Lunch at the summit turned into a relaxed break, full of banter, shared snacks, and that satisfying sense of achievement you only get in the mountains.

The return walk was just as enjoyable, with the intermittent sunshine continuing to play across the landscape and long shadows forming as the day shifted towards afternoon. We arrived back at Falls Creek with tired legs but high spirits—proof once again that age is no barrier to a great alpine adventure.

Mount Nelse delivered exactly what a good High Country hike should: wide-open vistas, clean mountain air, great track conditions, and even better company. For any group looking for a rewarding full-day walk from Falls Creek, this one is hard to beat.
